Pakistan Militant Ambush Leaves Four Policemen Dead

(MENAFN) A deadly assault in Pakistan's northwestern region claimed four police lives and left a senior officer wounded Tuesday, as insurgents ambushed security forces following an intelligence-driven operation.

The fatal strike occurred in Dera Ismail Khan district within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, prompting swift condemnation from Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who issued an official statement mourning the casualties and extending recovery wishes to the wounded deputy superintendent.

According to a newspaper, which cited law enforcement officials, the tragedy unfolded as officers withdrew from a targeted sweep triggered by intelligence indicating militant presence in the vicinity. Authorities had established a security perimeter before launching the operation, the police statement confirmed.

Insurgents concealed in surrounding forest terrain unleashed gunfire on the returning police convoy, sparking an intense firefight as officers engaged the attackers.

Multiple media outlets reported ongoing efforts by authorities to retrieve bodies of slain militants from the engagement zone. However, confirmation remains unavailable regarding whether—or how many—assailants were eliminated during the exchange.

The northwest province has experienced recurring militant violence, with security forces frequently conducting operations against armed groups operating in remote areas.
